Hair Removal: Which Method Is Best?

If you're bothered by unsightly hair, you'll find many hair removal methods available. Your task is to select the right one.

Before making a decision, you'll need to (a) research the treatment options available, and (b) answer a few questions about yourself.

Which Area Do You Want To Treat?

The area of the body you want hair-free will determine the method of hair removal you select. Is the unwanted hair on your face or elsewhere? You'll need to narrow it down even more. Do you want hair removed from your arms, legs, eyebrows, back, chest, pubic area, knuckles or where?

When you're clear about which precise area of the body you want to focus on, next you'll need to determine whether your hair problem is hereditary. Some people are simply more prone to growing darker, coarser hair. If that's in your genetic makeup, no amount of treatment is going to completely solve your situation. You will have to settle for improvement rather than cure.

How Much Can You Afford To Spend?

The next step is to determine your budget. It's important to be clear on the available money, because that will eliminate some methods. Also, be aware that most methods will require multiple treatments at various intervals. Costs for hair removal treatments can range from a few dollars a month to several thousand dollars per treatment. On average 5 or more treatments are required to do the job. Your goal is to face up to whether you can afford it, and, if so, whether it will be the best use of your money.

How Much Pain Can You Tolerate?

The next cut on which method to choose is to assess your level of pain tolerance. Seriously. Your selection of hair removal methods will depend in part on how much pain you can handle. A number of hair removal methods are uncomfortable to painful. Although the pain is temporary, only you can judge your ability to tolerate it. Waxing and electrolysis are considered the most painful, so if you can't tolerate pain, these methods will not do.

Hair Removal: Temporary Or Permanent?

You still have 1 more decision to make: do you want a permanent or a temporary hair removal method? Be aware that most methods are, unfortunately, temporary.

To permanently stop hair growth you must damage the hair germination structure within the hair follicle. To date, electrolysis is the only method that has been proven to achieve this goal. Laser therapy comes close, but more experimentation is needed for conclusive proof.

These 2 semi-permanent methods are the most expensive of all the options, so your budget may make this decision for you. A temporary method may be your only option.

Last, but certainly not least, it's very important that you make sure you're undergoing the hair removal process because you want to. It's not wise to let somebody else pressure you into this.

The Courage to Age Gracefully: The Transforming Power of Permanent Makeup

In 2006 women have many choices. Every day the media portrays women in positions of power in newspapers, on TV and the radio. Women are buying their own homes, having babies when they are over forty, marrying younger men or not getting married at all, driving race cars and working as the president's right hand man. Women are beginning to believe they can have it all, that their dreams can come true and they are right. As a permanent makeup professional I see many women in my practice from all walks of life. I am pleased that so many women I meet who are over fifty are living exciting, inspired and transformative lives. Quoted in a recent article by Jane Ganahl in the San Francisco Chronicle Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City, stated Five or six years ago we [women were talking about men, relationships and sex. But now it's about careers, aspirations, hopes, dreams -- what you hope to do in your life.

Redefine the Word ?Older?

Writer and humorist Erma Bombeck once said When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'. Living life to the fullest is one of the important parts of experiencing wholeness and satisfaction with your life. These days women in their 50's, 60's and even 70's go back to school, start dating, visit places they have never been, feel sexy, write novels, start businesses and purchase property. Women have reinvented themselves. Getting older no longer means hating loud music, getting shorter and having blue hair; it means being free of the responsibility of raising children, being more financially stable, having stronger and more passionate relationships because you know yourself better.

Let Yourself Shine

Loving the way you look is beneficial to how you age. Permanent makeup offers a wonderful alternative to cosmetic surgery, hours of applying makeup or simply feeling bad about your appearance. The ultimate aspect of beauty is up to you?shining your own unique light. Permanent makeup strives to enhance the features you have and increase the sharpness and clarity of facial color that begins to fade as we get older. Recently I had a client who is over seventy and after her permanent makeup procedures she told me even with the plastic surgery [3 facelifts, the permanent makeup is the one thing that gave me the most self-esteem. I wish I?d known about it and done it years ago.?

Believe in Your Own Power

It takes courage to grow old gracefully. Many people focus on the negatives and allow themselves to focus on the end of life, but life is really a series of beginnings and endings that happen every day. The experience of life really makes us more self aware and therefore more powerful. If we acknowledge that, we manifest growth and transformation. If we believe that age drains us and makes us weaker than it is very likely that will occur. Speaking of transformation, let me tell you about another client of mine. For over forty years, she had suffered from serious illnesses. Then multiple organ transplants freed her of diabetes and dialysis. To celebrate her new health and vitality, she had me apply color in her brows and lashes which had thinned out since the surgery. A burst retina makes it difficult to apply conventional makeup so permanent brows and eyeliner seemed the perfect solution. While in my office she told me It was not until after my transplants that I found myself asking the big questions of Life and seeking understanding.? It is never too late to take a new lease out on life and you can never predict the changes the Universe will give to you.

Carrie Fisher once said, I don't want life to imitate art. I want life to be art. Permanent makeup is living art. It is also functional, transformational and can change the way you view yourself and your future. As you get older don't wallow in the past, keep dreaming about the future and believe that you can age well. Manifesting beauty in your 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond happens inside and out; you have the power. Who Is The Master?

I wanted to kick off this article by reflecting back to 1985. I was a young boy watching Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon movie with a few of my friends. Like most boys I was amazed by the speed and grace of martial arts.

For those of you not familiar with the movie; the main character Leroy Green (a.k.a. Bruce Leroy) searches for the master to reach his final level of martial arts mastery known as the glow. During the course of his journey he must fight an evil martial arts expert known as Sho'nuff (a.k.a. The Shogun of Harlem) and finds himself having to rescue a beautiful singer from an obsessed music promoter. I know most of you are probably saying, ?What kind of movie is this?? remember it was the 80?s.

The most significant part of the movie, in my opinion, occurs during the final battle between Bruce Leroy and Sho?nuff. The setting is an abandoned warehouse (why wouldn't?t it be I thought all movies had to have an abandoned warehouse scene) where Leroy and Sho?nuff have been battling back and forth. Sho?nuff has Leroy held over a large tank of water and continually submerges Leroy?s head into the water while asking the question, ?Who is the master?? As Leroy is being held under water he starts to think back to the many lessons that he has learned during the course of his journey and realizes that the answers he has been searching for have always been within him. When Sho?nuff pulls him from the water one final time to ask, ?Who is the master?, Leroy confidently answers?.?I am?. Leroy develops the ?glow? by believing in himself and defeats Sho?nuff before rescuing the girl.

The point that I?m trying to establish is that everyone that I speak with today seems to be in search of the ?master?. Advertisers hammer home their messages. Store layouts, movies, television, radio, and magazines and of course the internet all sending us messages of where to find the ?master?.

We?ve become a society in search of instant gratification. If you call this 800 number, if you send back this card, if you log onto this site???..I?m sure you?ve heard them all. The health and fitness industry has capitalized on this concept. You know the one?s??..take this pill for 30 days and lose 30lbs., buy this ab crunch gadget use it for 2 minutes a day and be shredded, hook these pads up to your stomach and stimulate your abs for only minutes a day! All of these things to help us get the ?glow?.

I hope you understand that we are no different than Bruce Leroy. We are searching for answers that are within ourselves. When it comes to your health and wellness, you are the ?master?. You have to be willing to put in some hard work, sweat a little and do your best to have a clean diet. There are no magic pills or gadgets to help, and please don?t hook any type of electronic pads up to your stomach!

Start 2006 off right and remember, ?You are the master?.

Understanding Your Heart Rate

Your heart is a muscle that is located on the left side of your chest and is about the size of your fist. It sends blood thoughout your body, providing it with the proper nutrients and oxygen that it needs. The heart is also made up of four different blood filled areas which are called chambers. Each side of the heart contains two of these chambers that are used primarily to send blood to your lungs. This is why the need of cardiovascular exercise is important because the more blood being transfered from your lungs to your heart, the more calories you are burning.

A person`s heart rate in an exact measurement can and will determine one`s fat loss progress. With physical activity, the heart rate increases to supply the muscles with more oxygen so that the body produces more energy. The heart can beat up to two-hundred times per minute and the brain controls this rate by sending nerve signals to the heart. The rate in which a person`s heart beats depends on intensity of exercise, activity levels, and genetics. There is no one size fits all average for heart rate, it will vary on the individual.

A person`s resting heart rate is simply the number of times that your heart beats while resting. The average resting heart rate is anywhere from fifty-five to eighty-five beats per minute. Your resting heart rate gets higher as you get older and is lower with physically fit people. Athletes sometimes measure their resting heart rate as one way of finding out if they have overtrained. Measuring your resting heart rate is also used to determine a person`s target heart rate.

Athletes use a heart rate monitor as a training aid in identifying their maximum heart rate (MHR) to determine their needed training zones. The easiest method of calculating your maximum hear rate is to subtract your age from 220. Studies have show that one`s MHR on a treadmill is five to six beats higher than on an exercise bike, and two to four beats higher than on a rowing machine. It was also found that physically fit people over the age of fifty are likely to have a higher maximum heart rate that the average person of their age group.

This article was intended to provide you with the basic information of calculating your heart rate and information that will become useful when deciding to start your own cardiovascular workout. You also need to take into consideration that you don`t have to burn yourself out by calculating every single step you take to measure your heart rate. Believe it or not, some people actually do this and are looked at strangely by others as well. If you want to burn more calories, simply eat less or become more active, you don`t have to get scientific until you are advanced enough to know what you`re doing. Until next time, later!

Adult Acne Treatment Simple Solutions

Are you one of the millions of adults who have acne? Many adults are dealing with acne, the first signs of wrinkles and grey hair all at the same time ? talk about physical and emotional tolls. Life just seems too unfair at times. Fortunately, there are some simple solutions for treating acne. Really. You don?t have to live with it.

To properly treat acne, one must first understand what causes it. When hair follicles and sebaceous glands become inflamed acne follows soon after. Sebum is an oily substance made by the sebaceous glands. Bacterial growth and inflammation result when too much sebum is produced. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the four basic mechanisms contributing to acne are hormones, increased sebum production, changes inside hair follicles, and bacteria.

These simple solutions require persistence and consistency.

First things first, talk to a Dermatologist. A Dermatologist can provide you with the best solutions for you based on your medical history, age, skin type etc. Depending on the severity of your acne and your individual circumstances, your Dermatologist may want to prescribe an antibiotic, a vitamin A derivative like Isotretinoin, or one of the other acne drugs now available.

Use non-comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic basically means - not likely to block the pores of the skin, or cause blackheads or acne. There are many non-comedogenic products available today, including, makeup, foundation, moisturizers, sunscreen, lip stick, etc. If it?s something that you apply to your skin you should be able to find a non-comedogenic version. In fact, you can also find non-comedogenic and medicated makeup with acne fighting ingredients like, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur. These products shouldn?t clog your pores and should help treat acne.

Proper skin care is also very important. Gently washing with a facial cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or sulfur will also kill the bacteria that causes acne. Proactiv Solution is one such product that is used my millions of people ? with great results. Whatever product you decide to use, do not scrub your face as this can irritate your skin and make your acne worse.

Even though there is no cure for acne, there are several effective methods available today to treat it. By discussing your acne with a Dermatologist you can determine the best course of action for you. In the mean time, keep your chin up ? there are treatments available that will help you with your acne situation. Imagine waking up one morning and noticing how clear your face is becoming. It really is a great feeling!

A Close Look at Plastic Surgery

The long and interesting history of plastic surgery can be traced back to the ancient times. Doctors or medical practioners in old India started using skin grafts to reconstruct human skin spots in the 8th century BC.

An ancient Indian surgeon named Susrutha made the first recorded nose construction. He used a portion or some skin from a forehead. During that time, nose amputations were punishable by old Indian laws.

Several millennium later, the Romans performed simple techniques like repairing damaged ears. In Europe, Dr Heinrich von Pfolspeundt conducted a simple plastic surgery by removing skin coming from the arm’s back and sutured it in place.

However, the practice and science of plastic surgey advanced and became common only in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was because in the old times, too much danger was attributed to plastic surgeries.

In the United States, Dr John Peter Mettauer was the first American plastic surgeon. The first plastic surgery operation he performed was a cleft palate operation in which dates back to 1827. He designed his own instruments and operation materials.

The father of modern plastic surgery is Sir Harold Gillies. He was able to develop a number of techniques for modern plastic surgery. Sir Gillies focused on patients who suffered facial injuries during World War I.

Defining plastic surgery

The term plastic surgery is a general term referring to manual or instrumental treatment or operation performed for aesthetic or functional reasons or purposes.

The word ‘plastic’ from plastic surgey comes from a Greek ancient word ‘plastikos’ that means to shape or to mold.

There are two principal or main areas or fields of plastic surgery to date. These include:

o Reconstructive plastic surgery. This area of plastic surgery concentrates on masking or undoing destructions in the face or other external parts of the body. This form of plastic surgey include closing defects bu grafting skin with regional, local or distant flaps. Through the procedure tissues from other parts of the body is transferred to another part.

o Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery is the most common form of plastic surgery nowadays. This form of plastic surgery is most of the time made to modify or improve features in the face or body that the patient finds ugly or unflattering. Examples of this kind of plastic surgery are breast reduction or breast implantation.

Related disciplines to plastic surgery

From the history and the two broad areas of plastic surgeries, it can still be further subdivided. The American Board of Plastic Surgery also includes the study or further advancement in the following related specific disciplines:

o Craniofacial surgery. This form of plastic surgery involves the treatment or surgery to align or modify congenital or in-born physical defects, It includes cleft lip palate, craniosynostosis and other defects in the face due to in born causes and physical development.

o Hand surgery is another discipline where plastic surgeons are trained. They receive full training in the discipline.

o Maxillofacial surgery is one form of plastic surgery that involves maxilla or jaw and face. The field grew or sprang from the contributions and advancements in both oral surgeries and plastic surgeries. Examples of operations in this discipline are fractures in the jaw as well as in the face that may have arisen from accidents or brawls.

The Shocking Truth About Eight Deadly Diseases That May Be Affecting Your Health and Lifestyle

I came across an article written by Dr. Ray Strand, a family practitioner and author of several books including What Your Doctor Doesn?t know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You; Releasing Fat; Developing Healthy Lifestyles That Have a Side-effect of Permanent Fat Loss; and Bionutrition: The Amazing Health Benefits of Vitamin Supplements, to name a few. I would like to share with you what Dr. Strand has to say about the eight deadly diseases that are sending people to an early grave.

Deadly Disease Number 1: Heart Disease
Truth: Coronary artery disease is the number one killer in industrialized nations today, accounting for over 7.2 million deaths a year.

Heart disease is an inflammatory disease of the artery, not a disease of cholesterol. Over half of the patients who suffer a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels. The underlying cause of inflammation of the artery is oxidized LDL cholesterol, homocysteine, along with excessive free radicals caused by hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, fatty meals, and elevated insulin levels. All of these causes inflammation of the artery are either eliminated or reduced by the use of nutritional supplementation.

Deadly Disease Number 2: Cancer
Truth: 8.6 million people die of cancer yearly.

In spite of the great advances in the diagnosis and treat of cancer, the eventual outcome is too often a very difficult and painful death. Medical literature increasingly supports the fact that cancer develops from damage to the DNA of cells by unstable molecules over the course of 10 to 20 years.

Deadly Disease Number 3: Stroke
Truth: 5.5 million people die from stroke every year.

Stroke occurs suddenly and usually without warning. Dr. Meir Stampfer reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995 that 15 percent of all strokes could be related to elevated homocysteine, a by-product of protein metabolism that is elevated in individuals who have low levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12.

Deadly Disease Number 4: Diabetes
Truth: 194 million people suffer from diabetes, and it is estimated to rise to 300 million by the year 2025.

The overwhelming new cases of diabetes in the world today are the result of insulin resistance. Physicians are busy treating blood sugars rather than the underlying problem, the insulin resistance. Diet, exercise, and potent nutritional supplements all improve sensitivity to your own insulin and are critical in preventing diabetes from occurring in the first place or, if you already have diabetes, helping control your diabetes.

Deadly Disease Number 5: Osteoporosis
Truth: 25 million North Americans suffer from osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis and bone health depend not only on estrogen and calcium, but on a wide range of nutrients, including vitamins B6, C, D, K, folic acid, manganese, zinc, and copper. Failure to meet one or more of these nutrient needs could result in accelerated osteoporosis. Maintaining strong and healthy bones should begin early.

Deadly Disease Number 6: Arthritis
Truth: Over 165 million people have some form of arthritis,

More than 70 to 80 percent of the population over the age of 50 suffers from degenerative arthritis. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication does nothing to slow down the progression of the disease and is responsible for over 100,000 hospital admissions each year and 16,000 deaths. Glucosamine sulfate, along with complete and balanced nutritional supplements on the other hand, actually slows down degenerative arthritis and is even able to increase cartilage within the joint, without dangerous side effects.

Deadly Disease Number 7: Alzheimer?s:
Truth: An estimated 29 million people suffer from dementia.

Alzheimer?s dementia has been shown to be caused by oxidative stress. Patients who have the highest intake of antioxidants, which combats oxidative stress, have the lowest risk of developing Alzheimer?s dementia. Dr. Strand believes that the absolute best way to protect yourself against the development of these neurodegenerative diseases is by taking highly potent nutritional supplements.

Deadly Disease Number 8: Obesity
Truth: For the first time in the history of the United States and other industrialized countires, there are more people who are obese than are of normal weight.

Researchers are beginning to realize that one of the main causes of obesity is insulin resistance. Eating in such a way as not to spike your blood sugar, modest exercise, and nutritional supplements all improve insulin sensitivity. This triad of healthy lifestyle has a side effect of fat loss.

Disease Defined Its Types And What The Internet Has To Say About It

Most of us have known someone at one time or another with a disease, some considered curable and some not. Cancer is considered the most fatal among all diseases. Let's begin this article with the definition of the word and than explore more about the various types and close off with information about how the internet may actually be helping the situation.

Disease defined:

1. A pathological condition of a part, organ, or system of an organism resulting from various causes, such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress, and characterized by an identifiable group of signs or symptoms. 2. A condition or tendency, as of society, regarded as abnormal and harmful.

There are different types of diseases, some affect the brain, others are heart disease, alzheimers disease, lung disease, kidneys disease, eye disease, skin types like acne and other parts of the body have been known to develop diseases.

Communicable Disease: As the name suggests the germs of a communicable disease easily spreads in any environment. The most familiar communicable disease is the cold that contaminates easily. Curable Disease: Brain Disease: Excessive consuming of Alcohol and Drugs leads to a brain disease or brain disorder. Scientists have proved that over decade?s drug addiction has been the most contributing factor for brain diseases like alzeimers disease, brain cancer, etc.

Lung Disease: Lung disease is mainly caused by different types of bacterial infections. A large number of people suffer from pulmonary diseases that cause breathing and asthmatic problems. The inhaling of tobacco has been proved in most cases for developing lung diseases.

Eye Disease: Eye disorders are found mostly in aged persons. But far sightedness or short sightedness is also found in young children. There are different types of eye infections: cataract, dry eye, conjunctivitis and glaucoma which mostly affect adults.

Germs are responsible for Diseases

Germs are microscopic organisms responsible for different diseases. Being so tiny they're known to creep into our body without giving us any notice. Until there is any symptom of disease we can't realize that the germs have invaded our body. The Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi and Protozoa are the four major types of germs. The bacteria can cause a healthy person to become sick and even possibly can kill them. Once the viruses get inside our body they spread and make us sick. The fungus is a plant like micro organism that is responsible for allergic and skin diseases. The protozoa are similar to bacteria and usually cause intestinal infections.

Information and Treatment of Diseases over the Internet

Now a day?s people are using the internet to study information on health, diseases and medical treatments. With the help of the internet and other media the World Health Organization (WHO) can send out immediate warnings about the newly discovered killer diseases which are being spread by deadly viruses. Health officials are urging the governments of different countries around the world to create an alert for new killer diseases and their threats. In the conclusion to the topic it can be said that Prevention from these deadly diseases is always better than curing them.

Probably considered to be the main advantage the internet has brought about is the accumulative sharing of disease prevention information across geographical barriers. Scientists can now share their studies and findings with the rest of the world through the internet. This allows people who are researching disease prevention to also look into the medical recommendations and the natural remedies too.

I Can't Kick Coffee I Get Such A Headache

Did you know that Coca-Cola started life as a headache remedy? Surprised? Most people associate caffeine with causing headaches when they stop drinking coffee ? and that is true. But it can also treat headaches.

I?m confused already. How can it do both?

Let?s start at the beginning. Caffeine is actually a stimulant drug that works on the central nervous system. The World Heath Organization considers caffeine to be safe and says that it has no resemblance to addictive drugs that can wreak havoc in peoples? lives. People call it ?addictive? because it can cause symptoms if you stop drinking it. Used properly, it can make you more alert, less tired and it can even help with muscle co-ordination.

Caffeine to be found in every-day medication

If you ever read the small print on boxes of over-the-counter headache remedies and prescription medications, you will see that caffeine is a common ingredient. Caffeine added to some painkillers can make them 40% more efficient in getting rid of headaches ? which is a huge effect.

It can also get your headache under control more quickly as it helps the medication to be absorbed into the body faster. These benefits mean that less of the medication need to be taken ? which lowers the chance of side effects and even potential drug addiction.

Migraine coming on? Have a coffee.

Many migraine sufferers have discovered that they can keep a migraine at bay by having a coke or a cup of coffee, at the first sign of one. This works because much of migraine pain is caused by enlarged blood vessels pressing on the nerves surrounding them. One of the actions of caffeine is to constrict blood vessels. The effects of caffeine can be felt within half an hour and can last for between three and five hours.

This all sounds great! So whats bad about caffeine?

Caffeine is a stimulant so it can be a great pick-me-up but it can also drop you back down again ? especially if you take your coffee with sugar. Coffee can avert a migraine - but one of the worst things that a migraine sufferer can do is to drink large amounts of sugary coffee on an empty stomach. It can send your blood sugar levels soaring and that in itself can bring on a headache. It helps to combine it with food, drink decaf or cut down the sugar.

Caffeine is also a diuretic. Research has found that migraine sufferers benefit from increasing their magnesium levels, but caffeine may be getting rid of it as fast as you?re putting it in.

The dangers of hidden caffeine

People often have difficulty sleeping when they?ve drunk too much coffee. But what if you haven?t over-indulged? Don?t forget that caffeine can also be found in tea, chocolate and other soft drinks ? and don?t forget those painkillers. It can all add up.

I want to give up caffeine but won?t I get a withdrawal headache?

A person has to intake at least 15 grams of caffeine each month in order to suffer from a caffeine withdrawal headache. So if you drink 4-6 cups of coffee a day, you could get the headache. The average daily consumption of caffeine in America is 200-300mg ? that?s 2-3 cups. So if you fall into this category you should be ok.

The best method of cutting caffeine out all together is a gradual reduction over a period of time.

So caffeine is good and bad for my headaches?

Yes, it is. You really have to find what works for you. People react differently to different amounts too. The only way to find out is to experiment.

Herbs an Illuminating History from a South African Perspective

The practise of herb-gardening can be traced as far back as 4000 years ago in Egypt. Herb growing was often associated with temples, which required herbs for daily worship and ritual. Queen Hatshepsut (d. 1482BC imported frankincense (Boswellia sacra) and myrrh ( Commiphora myrrha) from Arabia, and cornflowers ( Centaurea cyanus), poppies (Papaver spp), mandrakes (Mandragora spp), figs (Ficus spp), and lotuses (Nymphaea lotus) appear in many wall paintings. From as early as 305AD herb-gardening was second only to prayer in the monastic regime. Monasteries were largely self-sufficient in produce, placing special emphasis on herbs to heal the sick. Herbs were also used to flavor a vegetarian diet as well as the brewing and distillation of ale, wine and liqueurs such as Benedictine, and the cosmetic Carmelite water which was based on Melissa officinalis. In the 16th century, herb gardens were planted by the universities for the purpose of teaching botany and medicine, subjects that were inextricably linked until separated by advances in science during the 18th century. Physic gardens as they were commonly known were to be found at many universities throughout Europe. Herbs were planted in alphabetical order and as new species were brought back by colonial explorers and botanical knowledge expanded, physic gardens housed a far greater range of plants and became the botanic gardens we know today.

Even though herbs have their roots in centuries gone by they are not a thing of the past. Thanks to the hippies of the 1960's and 1970's herbs have made a serious come back in the last decade. Approximately 80 percent of the worlds population rely on traditional plant based medicine, and 25 percent of prescription drugs contain plant extract. The USA's interest in medicinal herbs has increased by 100 percent since 1995 and similar increases have been seen in other countries across the globe.

A resurgence of interest has meant that consumers are finding herbs in the food industry, dietary supplements, teas, skin and hair-care products and aromatics. Culinary herbs have exploded into every kitchen thanks to the likes of Jamie Oliver and other TV cookery chefs.

The lives of people and herbs are so closely linked that we often forget the power they posses. The Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelus (c.1493-1541) wrote that All substances are poisons; there is none which is not poison. The right dose differentiates a poison and a remedy. Plants like Opium Poppy (Papver somniferum) and Coca (Erythroxylum coca) have been the cause of many wars throughout history. Life saving plants like Quinine (Cinchona Species) have prevented and treated malaria since the era of colonial expansion. Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) provided the basis for acetylsalicylic acid produced in 1899, and was named aspirin after (Spirea ulmaria) which was the old name for (Filipendula ulmaria). Aspirin is the world's most widely used drug.

People all over the world have picked, uprooted and used herbs since ancient times. Of the 250,000 species of flowering plants in the world, more than 20,000 are recorded as herbs, and in these numbers lies our greatest hope of finding new drugs to combat disease. (ASmit)

Electronic Medical Record

Medical records keep track of a patient's health history. They serve as a proper legal document the patient is entitled to read. A medical record can be maintained in two ways: either by hand-written documents (which is time-consuming, prone to error and take a lot of storage space), or by electronic medical records. Electronic medical records, under the law, cannot be seen by a third party, with some specific exceptions, without your permission. That way, nobody will be able to unfairly charge you for various things like insurance. Privacy is a big concern for most people; thus this law of privacy.

Electronic medical records come with a lot of advantages. They have ultimately replace (or will replace) hard-copy records of medical issues. That way your records can be accessed anywhere in the world, depending on where you receive the treatment you need. The advantages include:

a) Electronic medical records are more flawless than those written manually.

b) Record of medical history written electronically can store more information than those written by hand.

c) Electronic medical records are more accurate, and easier to maintain.

d) They save a lot of time, as the required medical data is easily obtainable by the push of a button.

e) Privacy is best maintained by electronically stored medical data. When it is written by hand there is always the possibility of a lack of privacy.

f) Electronic medical records help a lot when it comes to the question of storage and maintenance of the medical data.

The application of sophisticated software has facilitated the better maintenance of such medical records.

Lower Back Care

Many people have pain in different areas of their body including their lower back. There's a variety of medical issues that can cause pain. Many type of lower back pain are caused by injury and generally do not last long. You can know what to do about the uncomfortable pain in your lower back by trying to eliminate the factors that cause it, and by the length of time its been going on. The pain can be dealt with, and you can find a way to live with it.

There's are a lot of reasons that you might be experiencing back pain. The body is a complicated machine, so it might take you a lot of investigation and deduction on finding out the cause for the pain in your lower back. The back is a long and complex structure that helps us remain upright, helps us sit, and keeps us balanced when we walk. An acute condition is when pain erupts from your back that is sudden and usually related to an injury in the lower back. Chronic pain is found in on going medical problems that are more than likely related to disease or an injury from the past.

Traumatic injury occurs from situations like lifting something incorrectly, or suddenly reaching for an item that makes you stretch too far. When the back is tight, overstretching it cause acute pain. Lots of injuries occur at work in the lower back, but don't be fooled that it can't happen at home either. The back in involved whenever we try to lift or carry anything. A sprain or strain in your lower back happens when you damage muscles, tendons or ligaments in your lower back. There is usually a dull aching pain, and sharp pain when moving about. You can relieve the pain by lying in a prone position and apply ice or heat.

On-going long term pain can be due to several conditions. If you're an elderly person, know that the disc in the spine become rigid and looses elasticity as you age. The discs are jelly-like sacs filled with fluid that help to cushion the vertebrae. As we age, these discs start to dry out and loose their elasticity. Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are two of the top reasons pain develops in the lower back for the aged. Pain sensations can be sharp or a continual dull ache. Other types of diseases and birth defects can cause pain, so be sure to let your doctor know if its been going on for longer than 3 months. A chronic condition involving pain needs to be treated, so you can live a more productive life.

Taking care of yourself is a necessity if you want to live an active and pain-free life. You can use a few precautions and healthy life-style choices by not gaining weight, having poor posture, or sleeping in awkward positions. Excess weight puts strain on the back so watch your weight, and poor posture especially when you're sitting, pulls the muscles and ligaments out of their natural position from the spine. An unnatural sleeping position does the same pulling on your lower back that poor posture does while you're awake. Caring for your lower back is not all that hard, and it is the least you can do for your hard working back.

Cold Sores

Tips For Healing Cold Sores

That tingling you feel just above your upper lip is unmistakable. You know that it's the start of another cold sore. You've gone through this routine before. First it gets red, then that itchy tingly area puffs out into a big embarrassing cold sore. For some reason you can't stop checking yourself out in the mirror. Why, you wonder, does it have to happen to me ?

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. It's likely that some relative of yours infected you when you were a child by kissing you at a time when their herpes simplex was infectious. The virus went right into your mouth and sought a hospitable host cell that would let the virus move right in. The virus then ordered the DNA in its host cell to make lots more viruses exactly like it.

For most of the time, these viruses are homebodies. They stay put, but from time to time the virus family likes to take a little trip down the nerve highways until it reaches the skin surface. When this happens, you start to feel that awful tingling sensation that signals the start of another cold sore.

What can you do about it ?..

Keep The Cold Sore Clean And Dry.
If the cold sore isn't really bothersome, just leave it alone. Make sure to keep the sore clean and dry. If it become pussy - and this rarely happens - seek medical attention to make sure the bacterial infection is properly treated.

Replace Your Toothbrush.
Your trusty toothbrush can hold the herpes virus for days, reinfecting you after the present cold sore heals. Get rid of your toothbrush as soon as you start with a cold sore, and after your cold sore has gone, replace your toothbrush for a second time just in case. Don't take any chances.

Don't Keep Your Toothbrush In The Bathroom.
A nice wet toothbrush in a moist environment like your bathroom is a cosy home for the herpes simplex virus. The moisture helps prolong the life of the herpes virus on your toothbrush, that's why it should be stored in a dry place.

Use Small Tubes Of Toothpaste
Toothpaste can transmit disease too, so if you use smaller tubes, you'll be replacing your toothpaste more often.

Protect With Petroleum Jelly.
Cover your cold sore with petroleum jelly. Be sure not to dip back into the jelly with the same finger you used to touch your sore. It would be better to use fresh cotton buds.

Zap It With Zinc.
Several studies have shown that a water-based zinc solution applied the minute you feel that tingling, will help speed the healing time. The zinc irons crosslink with the DNA molecule of the herpes virus and prevent the double helix from splitting, this means the virus can't get the DNA to help it replicate. Zinc gluconate, available at health food stores, is kinder to the skin than zinc sulphate.

Identify The Pattern
What was going on in your life just before you got your last cold sore ? What about the cold sore prior to that ? If you do some investigating, you just might figure out what triggers a cold sore for you. If you can find a trigger, you'll know when to take the most care.

Soften It With An OTC
There are numerous products that claim to heal cold sores. In general, they contain some emollient to reduce cracking and soften scabs, and a numbing agent like phenol or camphor. Phenol may have some antiviral properties, and it's possible that it could kill the virus.

Block That Sun (Or Wind)
Protecting your lips from trauma like sunburn or wind exposure is thought be one of the keys to preventing cold sores.

Avoid Arginine-Rich Foods.
The herpes virus needs arginine as an essential amino acid for its metabolism, so cut out foods such as chocolate, cola, peas, grain cereals, peanuts, gelatine, cashews and beer.

Correct Your Perception.
No one likes getting a cold sore. But you've got one, so focusing on it and worrying about how you look can make it worse. Cut out your negative thoughts. Tell yourself that it's just like a pimple and it won't interfere in your life in any way !

Pleural Mesothelioma

Nearly 75 percent of mesotheliomas are initiated in the chest and are called pleural mesotheliomas. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this devastating disease. This occurs when asbestos fibers enter the pleura, which is the membrane that covers the lungs, and results in the formation of malignant cells. The people most at risk of developing this rare form of cancer are construction workers who have been exposed to asbestos fibers for extended periods of time, their families, who are exposed to the asbestos fibers that collect on the clothes of the workers, and people who live or work in buildings that are insulated with asbestos material.

The risk of developing malignant pleural mesothelioma depends on several factors, such as the length of time the person has been exposed, and the nature of the asbestos fibers involved as well as the different kinds of industries. Other factors can also contribute to onset of pleural mesothelioma.

The symptoms at the initial stage can resemble that of pneumonia. When malignant mesothelioma originates in the pleural cavity, the first symptom may be a mild pain in the chest or back. When malignant pleural mesothelioma spreads, organs and tissues in the immediate area can be affected. It grows into the chest wall, muscles and ribs. The pain changes from mild, general and episodic to severe, localized and chronic as the disease progresses. Severe pain may not respond to oral doses, intravenous infusions, or intramuscular injections of analgesics or narcotics.

There are at least two other forms of mesothelioma, but pleural mesothelioma responds best to treatment. Unfortunately, the fatality rate remains high. However, extensive research is going on to alleviate the pain of mesothelioma sufferers, develop a vaccine, and treat the progression of the cancer.

Mesothelioma provides detailed information about malignant mesothelioma, asbestos and mesothelioma, mesothelioma, mesothelioma research and more. Mesothelioma is the sister site of Asbestos Exposure.

Acne Medicines That Work

Acne is a type of skin lesion caused by blockage of sebum gland follicle duct. The gland gets infected by P.Acnes, a bacterium found naturally in the skin. There are many medicines available in the market for acne cure. The medicines are mostly available as acne creams, acne lotions, acne cleansers, acne pills, acne injections etc. The acne cream ingredients may include the following medicines.

Benzoyl peroxide, triclosan and chlorhexidine gluconate are anti bacterials that kill the bacteria present in acne. Benzoyl peroxide acne lotion is considered the best medicine and has a high effectiveness rate of nearly 75%.

Salicylic acid, glycolic acid and other mild acids acne lotions work by peeling skin on a micro level and thereby opening the pore. They are used for mild to moderate acne.

Erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracycline are antibiotics that are either applied topically in the form of acne lotions or taken orally in the form of acne pills. They are used to kill the bacteria. However P.Acnes has developed resistance to most antibiotics. Antibiotics are given in cases of severe acne along with benzoyl peroxide acne lotion.

Cyproterone, drospirenone and cortisone are given in hormonal treatment for acne. They are designed to reduce the production of sebum. Hormone treatment is more effective in women.

Tretinoin, adapaline, retinol and isotretinoin are retinoids. They are available in the form of acne lotions or acne creams. They are designed to regulate the life cycle of follicle cells to prevent hyperkeratinization of follicle cells.

All these are available as acne lotions, acne cleansers, acne creams, pills, injections etc. Most are available over the counter. Self medication can be dangerous. Consult your doctor before using any medicine listed here.

There are many dietary supplements like Acuzine available in the market to aid the medicines listed above. They work by providing vital ingredients required by the skin to recover. They may consist of ingredients like anti-oxidants, vitamins E & C, hydrolyzed collagen, ALA, DMAE, Aloe vera, Bioperine etc.

Body Building Supplements

Introduction:

Bodybuilding supplements consists of various substances including proteins and amino acids, metal replacement products, prohormones, testosterone boosters and are taken by boy builders and sports persons to help building muscle or supplement fat loss. These bodybuilding supplements are also suitable for improving sports performance.

Amino acids, Branched chain amino acids, glutamine and protein:

Protein consumed by our body metabolizes into amino acids. The bodybuilders prefer most commonly three branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. Muscles metabolize these branched chain amino acids. Additionally these branched chain amino acids are assumed to have resistance towards muscle breakdown.

Although soy protein, a naturally occurring complete protein may sometime exhibit estrogenic activity and is therefore avoided by many of the bodybuilders, however egg protein is preferred as it is also a complete protein. Casein, another richest protein source of amino acid glutamine is preferred as it contains casomorphine additionally, which releases amino acids at regular intervals.

Bodybuilders prefer to take protein just after exercise or as a replacement of meal. Protein powders are available in the market and right quantity of these at recommended helps in making muscles, as muscles are primarily made of protein and protein also helps us in repairing and growth of muscles.

Whenever you purchase a protein packet, you must look for total serving in the pocket and gram protein, gram carbs, gram sugar and gram fat per servings. If you are lactose intolerant, you should select a protein packet, which does not contain lactose. On the basis of all these information you must select the right product suitable for you.

Metal Replacement Products:

The metal replacement products are either available in powder form or in bar form. Powder form can be mixed with water, milk or juice and can be taken thereafter, however bars can be consumed straight away.

These are made available for complete meal replacement and contains high amount of proteins, moderate amount of carbohydrates and also contains various vitamins and minerals.

Various manufacturers of metal replacement products claim to have added soy protein, egg albumin, whey protein or micellar casein as source of protein. For replacement of carbohydrates ingredients derived from oat fiber, wheat flour or maltodextrin have been added. Some may contain essential fatty acids substitute and other mineral substitutes. Some other products such as glutamine peptide and additional amino acids are also added by some of the manufacturers.

Creatine Monohydrate:

Creatine monohydrate is one of the essential organic acids. It is one of the few products suitable for making healthy muscles. Creatine monohydrate is useful for sports persons engaged in weight lifting and short-range sprinters. Creatine monohydrate works in our body and plays a vital role in making and replenishing of ATP. It is also occurs naturally in beef, pork, and salmon.

If you are on creatine, you may notice a weight gain as creatine has a volumizing effect and draws water and various other nutrients to muscle cells.

Some of the common and minor side effects associated with intake of creatine include stomach upset and gastrointestinal distress. Although, some of the recent studies on creatine shows that it has a positive influence on our heart health and it lowers our lipid profile.

Prohormone Supplements:

Prohormones are precursors to both male and female hormones. Body builders are only interested in the supplements capable to increase male hormone testosterone as at elevated level testosterone will lead to improved muscle growth. Studies carried out on various prohormone have not given the desired results. Some of the horhormone are not significant and effective and may have side effects.

Pleural Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Proper diagnosis of Pleural Mesothelioma, a form of cancer in the thoracic cavity caused by contact with asbestos, is of great importance because it enables the patient to get disease-specific treatment immediately and also arms him adequately for any lawsuit for compensation.

Unfortunately, diagnosis of this sickness is a very difficult process. The reasons are several. There are no specific to the disease outward signs. The symptoms like breathing difficulty, coughing, weight loss, chest and back pains, and fatigue among others are common to many ailments. They can confuse a doctor. And these indications take twenty to forty or fifty years after contact with asbestos to manifest. If some cases there may be no perceptible clues till the cancer has spread. Many doctors are unfamiliar with the disease. One key factor that would give the correct lead to a doctor is the information whether the patient had exposure to asbestos in the past. Since most of the pleural mesothelioma patients are in the sixty-seventy age group, there is the possibility that some of them may not recall details dating back forty or fifty years.

Diagnostic procedure starts with studying the patient?s medical history in detail and giving him a complete physical check up. Next comes imaging. This includes x-ray, CT (Computed Tomography) scan, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and PET (position emission tomography). These may reveal irregular thickening of the pleura (membrane lining the thorax), fluid collection in that area, congestion of the lungs, and mineral deposits. Magnified view and laboratory tests assist in determining whether chemicals found are the same as those seen in pleural mesothelioma cases. Analysis of fluid, tissues and lymph nodes helps in reaching a conclusion. Sometimes bronchoscopy, in which a lighted flexible tube is inserted through the moth, is done. Thorascopy in which the doctor looks into the chest cavity may also be performed. Finally, a pleural biopsy confirms the diagnosis.

An October 2005 report states that a new method that assists diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma is to measure the presence of osteopontin in blood.

How To Heal With Yoga

Yoga is a generic term for the various spiritual disciplines in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is practiced throughout South Asia. Its prime aim is to pave the way to higher consciousness through liberation from suffering, ignorance and rebirth. Vedic and Buddhist literature is strewn with stories of yogis who attained miraculous prowess by practicing various kinds of meditations and austerities. Today, yoga is usually practiced under the guidance of a guru or a spiritual guide.

The word ?Yoga? is derived from Sanskrit where it means ?to unite?. Therefore yoga connotes an exercise in mental and moral cultivation that generates excellent health and contributes to longevity in life. The total and intrinsic discipline exercised by a yogi culminates in positive and perennial happiness. It is a science which affects the conscious as well as the subconscious aspect of the mind.

There are some misconceptions about Yoga. Yoga is NOT black magic, sorcery, white magic or mental or physical debauchery. Some consider yoga to be a dangerous practice that should be engaged by those who have renounced the world. Some even think of it as a kind of mental acrobatic that is fit to be practiced only by certain sections in the world.

Yoga is an all-encompassing science that depends on mental discipline. It ensures the purgation of the soul and removal of the ignoble which will bring forth what is most noble in man. Irrespective of caste, creed, sex and religion yoga embraces all of human life. The believer and the non-believer, the sick and the healthy, the literate and the ignorant, the young and the old ? everyone can embrace yoga. One can begin practicing yoga at any age and continue doing so throughout life.

For a person practicing yoga, there is an emphasis on restraint from vice through observance of virtue, purity and controlling of uncontrolled desires. The main technique used in yoga is ?asanas? or postures. This along with ?pranayama? or breath control helps to calm the body and draw vital energy forces into the body. Detaching the mind from the external mind through the withdrawal of senses is done through ?dhyana? or meditation. A common feature of yoga is intense concentration on a single point, be it a diagram, a part of the body, the breath or even a mantra.

In the modern world, it is almost impossible for man to achieve the mental prowess of the ancient yogis. Therefore, yoga cannot be seen as an alternative to medicine. But when teamed with Western healing practices, yoga is amazingly effective. Yoga is very effective in helping patients overcome pain, and the anxiety or depression associated with pain.

Yoga is not just a medical science; it?s a complete way of life. It lays down strict dietary recommendations and lifestyle practices that helps one achieve and maintain good health. Yoga has been adopted by people for the treatment of various conditions like constipation, back pain, indigestion, diabetes and blood pressure. Exercises prescribed by yoga are excellent if you want to lose weight and gain control over your body. One of the greatest benefits of practicing yoga is that it makes you aware of the various muscles in your body and teaches you how to control any PARTICULAR set of muscles.

Thus Yoga as a way of life and as a holistic therapeutic science has gained a lot of acceptance in the world today. Even though a person practicing yoga may never reach the heights of a yogi, they can learn to live a richer and happier life by practicing these techniques.

Vitamin and Mineral Facts

Vitamins & Minerals are essential to sustain life. Its what keeps us alive and healthy. Among many other things, they help us digest food, burn energy, grow hair, re-build muscel fibers, strenghten cells, and its what keeps our skin smooth. Since our bodies are made out of these certain vitamins and minerals, we need to consume these nutrients daily to replenish our bodys useages.

Minerals and vitamins are macronutrients. A macronutrient is something that our body needs in small amounts. This is different than nutrients that we need in larger amounts like proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Not only are vitamins and minerals macronutrients, but they are considered coenzymes as well. This is because they assist the enzymes in the body to carry out all of the daily activities as efficiently as possible.

The major vitamins are divided into two categories. One category is ?water soluble vitamins? and the other is ?oil soluble vitamins.? Water soluble vitamins must be taken daily because they are not stored in the body, but are excreted quickly. Examples of water soluble vitamins are Vitamin C and Vitamin B (B-Complex Vitamins). Oil soluble vitamins are stored longer in the body?s fatty tissue and in the liver. Oil soluble vitamins include Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Both water and oil soluble vitamins are considered essential as the body needs them to function properly.

Fibromyalgia Signs and Symptoms

Sometimes you wake up stiff in the morning. You may hurt all over and frequently feel tired. You have gone to the doctors and they can't find anything wrong with you. If you have these symptoms then you may suffer from fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is an increasingly recognized chronic pain characterized by muscles aches, pain and stiffness. Some have soft tissue tenderness and general fatigue and sleep problems. Other may have headaches, problems with thinking and memory, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet and if you are a woman you have painful menstrual periods.

So far the causes for fibromyalgia are unknown. There could be a number of factors involved such as stressful or traumatic events, illness, repetitive injuries and certain diseases. Sometimes it just happens on its own. Some researches say it is genetic. Some doctors say it could be chemical changes in the brain while others say it could start from a viral infection.

Fibromyalgia affects about 1 in 50 Americans. It occurs more often in women than in men. It usually develops in middle adulthood and it can occur in children. If you have a family history of fibromyalgia you may get it too. Another risk factor could be if you have a rheumatic disease like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. People who have ankylosing spondylitis have been know to develop fibromyalgia as well.

Right now there is no test that can confirm fibromyalgia. Doctors need to rely on the patient's history of complaints and reported symptoms. You may have to go through a series of medical tests like blood tests and x-rays. These will probably come back normal. It has been estimated that it could take as long as five years to be diagnosed with fibromyaligia. The American College of Rheumatology came up with a general classification for fibromyalgia and the criteria that has been established is that you must have widespread aching for three months and have at least 11 locations on the body that are very tender under mild pressure. These guidelines are used to help with the assessment and study of the condition. Fibromyalgia is not progressive and doesn't lead to other conditions. The symptoms, however, can lead to depression and lack of sleep. It can interfere with your everyday life.

Fibromyalgia can be treated by changing you life style. Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep are good places to start. Over the counter pain medications may help with the chronic joint pain. The doctor may prescribe Tramadol, which is a non-narcotic pain reliever. He may also prescribe low doses of anti-depressants. This is for serotonin building that may provide relief for sleep and pain. Higher levels may be prescribed if the patient is experiencing depression as well.

People with fibromyalgia have a good prognosis. Now more than ever, the disease is getting recognition and people who suffer are more educated about the disease and after making some lifestyle changes are having a better quality of life. Most people do improve over time.

Whole Wheat Bread V. White Bread Which One Is Better?

Junk food addicts argue with health food nuts, asserting white bread to be the best. The health food nuts retaliate exclaiming about how much better store bought whole wheat bread is than white bread.

The battle rages on...

On which side of this debate do you stand?

For that matter, which side should you REALLY be pulling for?

Lets weigh all the facts, the faults about each choice and determine which one we should honestly be proclaiming as ?the honest to goodness best!?

THE FAULTS OF WHITE BREAD

1. White bread is nutrition less. Even fortifying it with vitamins can?t replace half of the nourishment that is lost through the bleaching and sifting process that is used on the flour which white bread is make out of.

2. White bread has a lot harmful chemicals and preservatives added to it to increase it?s shelf life, but they decrease your lifespan.

3. White bread is practically tasteless. This is a pro to some people but a con to a lot of others who enjoy tasty food.

THE FAULTS OF STORE BOUGHT WHOLE WHEAT BREAD

1. Store bought whole wheat bread would be extremely healthy and good for your body IF you could find a loaf made without fattening and nutrition less sweeteners like sugar (but no store that I know of sells any such thing).

2. Store bought whole wheat bread contains, unfortunately, the same chemicals and preservatives that white bread does, also to lengthen shelf life.

On light of this information which viewpoint do you now hold to?

Neither hopefully. There is only one thing you can do to make sure you are getting the best tasting, highest quality and healthiest bread. And that is...

Bake your own whole wheat bread! Read why you should below.

THE VIRTUES OF HOME BAKED WHOLE WHEAT BREAD

1. Home baked whole wheat bread tastes good. Home baked whole wheat bread has a very delightful taste that is probably the main reason (even more so than it?s health aspects) people prefer home baked whole wheat bread to it?s bland counterpart, white bread or unhealthy store bought whole wheat bread.

2. Home baked whole wheat bread contains vitamins and minerals your body needs. Medical studies have proven that all the B vitamins in whole grain foods help you to have a healthy heart, and guard against heart disease.

3. Baking your own whole wheat bread is not the least bit ?difficult? either. Just learn the basics to baking bread along with a few proven recipes and you?ll be set.

Medical Review Companies Role in Your Insurance Claims Your Health Coverage and Guarantee

A medical review company supplies more than a second opinion. The unbiased nature of a medical review company is critical not only to the bottom dollar, but to the final result. Too often, patients think they are just numbers in a file or bits of information in a computer program. The maligned image of an insurance company?s automatic denial of claims without really understanding the patient?s need contributes consumer dissatisfaction and frustration.

What Does It Have to Do With You?

Patients are people and when they need healthcare, they don?t want to read the fine print or a medical dictionary, they just want their claims covered. Most often, it?s unlikely they would realize that their insurance claim went through an Insurance Review Organization?s medical insurance review process. In fact, they probably just fill out the forms, hand a receptionist their insurance card and sign on the necessary release forms.

One of the most common complaints about needing healthcare is the cost followed closely by the complications of paperwork generated through authorization forms, claim forms and more. An insurance review organization is an intermediary company that insurance companies may outsource their claims to in order to determine with medical and insurance coverage accuracy the validity of a claim filed by someone insured by their company.

Your Health Matters

Insurance companies who deny a claim are often portrayed as heartless or more interested in the bottom dollar than they are about showing compassion. This perception is only augmented when an insurance company rejects a claim for anecdotal evidence. When a claim goes through a medical review company?s insurance review process ? it will not be rejected or denied based on anecdotal evidence.

For example, a patient suffers from shoulder, back and neck pain as well as bra strap grooving and eczema. Her medical history indicates years of chiropractic treatment as well as advice for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. Tylenol, Advil) and worn specialized support bras to support a 34DD frame and all of it to no success. Excessively large breasts can cause many of the symptoms the woman?s medical history indicated.

The doctor recommended a breast reduction procedure to alleviate the problem and the symptoms.

Your Coverage Matters

When the claim is submitted to the insurance company, the policy may not cover elective cosmetic procedures. Many policies do not. Claim managers lacking medical expertise will often compare a procedure request against a list of approved procedures. If cosmetic procedures are not covered, it is likely the claim will be denied. The patient is left either choosing to pay for the procedure out of pocket or continuing to suffer.

If the claim is submitted to a third party intermediary such as a medical review company, the answer will be different. The medical review company has access to a large number of medical specialist and insurance experts. The medical specialists will review the patient?s medical history and the doctor?s recommendations. When her file is reviewed, the third-party specialist will take into account the history of shoulder, neck and back pain. They will note the visits to a chiropractor and other pertinent symptoms.

If the medical specialist agrees with the patient?s physician that she is suffering from Macromastia (excessively large breasts), then he or she will understand that the cosmetic surgery of breast reduction provides the patient with the best option for the patient?s relief.

Confidence Matters

The review process may be transparent to patients whose insurance company uses a medical review company; but the effect is profound. Their coverage premiums will likely be lower. Their medical needs will be addressed. They will not see their healthcare costs rise due to the underwriting of unnecessary procedures. When it comes right down to it, a medical review company gives patients confidence that both their medical and insurance needs will be met. Stretching The Solution to Repetitive Strain Injuries?

To stretch or not to stretch? This is a question that has been posed by many people in their quest to eliminate repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, guyon's syndrome, tendonitis and many other upper extremity disorders.

The answer is yes, stretching in most cases is important in order to increase the length of tight, restrictive tissues. But there is a catch. Lets use the wrist and forearm as an example. If you stretch and lengthen one side of the hand and forearm, say the front side, you need to strengthen and shorten the opposing side, or back of the hand and forearm. If you just stretch one side and then do not perform exercises to the opposing muscle group, the tissues that were stretched go right back to where they were as there is nothing stopping them from returning back to their original position.

This is where the strengthening exercises come in. By contracting and shortening the opposing muscle group, or back of hand and forearm, the length created through stretching the front of the hand and forearm is maintained, keeping the muscles from returning to their original position.

Stretching alone is NOT the answer. A well-rounded solution is to perform both stretches and exercises in order to create balance around the joint. This is true with ANY and ALL joints. Be aware of the following when you implement a stretching program:

? Perform stretches while in a properly aligned position.

? Don't strain or stretch too far-never stretch to the point of pain.

? Increase the stretch only after you feel yourself / muscles relax.

? Breathe slowly while stretching.

? Do not hold your breath while stretching.

? Do not overstretch beyond a point to where you feel pain.

? Hold each stretch for 15-20 seconds to allow the muscle to relax.

? Repeat each stretch 2-3 times.

? Think about the area being stretched (Be in tune with your body).

? If you feel pain ease off to a more comfortable position.

? If pain continues consult your doctor.

? Stretch within your limits.

? Your flexibility may vary daily so do not try to overdo it if your body says ?no?.

? Adjust each stretch to your own level of flexibility.

? Stretching is important to maintain flexibility so be sure to stretch as least 3-days per week.

? Follow up exercises are important to maintain the effects of the stretch. Perform these exercises immediately to the opposing muscle group(s) that was just stretched in order to maintain structural balance.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome ? What to Eat When You Suffer from IBS

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not really a true disease; it is classified as a functional disorder. Whatever it is classified as, if you have it, you suffer, and feel and are ill.

If you have it, we will outline what you should and should not eat here.

The usual symptoms are:

?Bloating and gas

?Constipation and / or

?Diarrhea

?Feeling like you still need to have a bowel movement after you've already had one

?Feeling a strong urge to have a bowel movement

?Pain and cramping

?Occasional mucus in the stools.

What are the examinations the doctor needs to do to confirm the diagnosis?

Physical exam

Blood tests

X ray of the bowel: This x-ray test is called a barium enema or lower GI (gastrointestinal) series. Barium is a thick liquid that makes the bowel show up better on the x ray. Before taking the x ray, the doctor will put barium into your bowel through the anus (a barium enema).

Endoscopy: The doctor inserts a long thin tube into your bowel. The tube has a camera in it, and other mechanical devices, so the doctor can look at the inside of the bowel to check for problems. What is the treatment? Is there a Cure?

Sadly there is no cure (as its not classed as a disease) but there are three methods used to alleviate the symptoms. These are: (in order of importance)

diet changes

medicine

stress relief

For diet change, see the rules below.

For medicines, you must speak to your doctor. There are several, but the most important may be for control of acute diarrhea. Stress does not cause IBS, but may trigger it (as does the wrong foods) so you must learn stress management (see our article on stress management.

As to diet, see these important rules below to control your symptoms and avoid the following food if you can, as they are known triggers to the symptoms of IBS:

Fatty foods like French fries , milk products like cheese or ice cream (except yogurt and parmesan cheese), chocolate, alcohol, caffeine (found in coffee and some sodas), carbonated drinks like soda.

Also do the following

Drink no less than 8 glasses of water daily

Eat foods rich in fiber. Fiber can be helpful because it improves how the intestines work, whether you have diarrhea, constipation or both.

Fiber also may reduce bloating, pain and other symptoms of IBS. It does this by bulking the stools and making them softer. Foods rich in fiber are: bran, carrots, apple, whole grain bread, and natural cereals (such as rice).

Eat natural yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, or any other of the cultured milk products that are not fatty.

Eat smaller portions, and more times per day, chewing your food at least 25 chews before swallowing.

Test which spices are ok for you. Ginger in small amounts can be really helpful. Hot chili and other similar spices are person specific. You must test yourself, and if the reaction is negative, avoid them from then on.

Remember that IBS is not going to kill you, but you must do your best to eliminate the symptoms. Proper rest, exercise and good mental attitude also can assure your return to a normal bowel.

Tamiflu Side Effects

Introduction:

To talk to you about the side effects of Tamiflu, I should be telling you what Tamiflu is. Tamiflu is an anti viral drug. This drug is taken to reduce the chances of symptoms appearing in human beings. The next question comes as to what is this anti viral drug used against. This anti viral drug is used to fight off the effects of bird flu attack in human beings.

Flu, as you know is a common problem faced by human beings when they are exposed to extreme conditions or when the antibody is fighting a viral infection within the body. The result is a flu which is displayed as a raise in temperature of the body. The symptom starts off with a sore throat more often than not. One may experience cough, with aching of the muscles, headache and a loss of appetite.

Any flu when left untreated, without proper rest and medication will lead to pneumonia. If the affected person is treated with proper care and given proper rest, then the flu may disappear. If not, this will lead to pneumonia. Pneumonia will result in death in a short time span of two days or so if again left untreated. Proper dosages of the drug are to be given to the patient suffering from flu and if it is bird flu then serious attention is to be given.

Side effects:

The drug Tamiflu is to be given in proper dosages as prescribed by your doctor. Exceeding the dosage limits for any drug will lead to serious side effects. As with any drug, Tamiflu will affect you in any of the following ways. You may experience a serious allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may be a difficulty in breathing. This will be caused by either a swelling of your tongue, lips or you may experience a construction of the throat. You may also have a swelling of your face. In any of these allergic reactions you should discontinue your medication and consult your doctor about it. In the case of the allergic reaction do not wait for the swelling to subside but go to the nearest emergency room.

Other than this you may experience less serious side effects. They may range from, you having a feeling of dizziness, nausea, vomiting. You may have a serious case of diarrhea, experience abdominal pains, or abdominal cramps. Some of you may experience a feeling of sleeplessness (insomnia). Fatigue, cough and other respiratory symptoms are also some side effects the one may experience. In these cases, you should not discontinue taking the medication, but the same time you should talk to your doctor about it.

The side effects of Tamiflu, when you are taking other medication are almost none. Though so far no clinical tests have proved that Tamiflu reacts with other medication it would be a good idea to tell your doctor that you are taking other medication when you are being prescribed Tamiflu.

If you are studying into the side effects of Tamiflu then you should know that Tamiflu is only a brand name. The main ingredient of Tamiflu is Oseltamivir. It (Tamiflu) when taken with medication to treat problem relating to the kidneys may throw up a different side effect. This may be dizziness or over drowsiness. Side effects of Tamiflu may be prominent if you are in the habit of consuming alcoholic beverages. Let not Tamiflu stop you from taking your regular influenza vaccination, as no side effects of Tamiflu have been observed along with it. For a complete list of side effects it would be better to have a discussion with your health care provider.

So far no one has reported experiencing any side effects which can be considered as of a serious nature.

Communication Skills for Yoga Teachers

Here is an oxymoron for you: Some of the best Yoga teachers are great listeners. This is a general guideline for Yoga students who aspire to teach some day. Listening skills, in Yoga, start when you take your first class, as you learn by hearing, watching, and doing.

The Yoga student who learns predominantly by listening will be able to verbally communicate the finer techniques to others in the future. This is not to say that other methods of learning have less value, but a skilled Yoga teacher must be a communicator and be able to reach into each individual student?s mind.

Therefore, not all Yoga students can learn from you in the same way. Some will learn by listening carefully to your cues, others will gain more from an assist, and some will be able to copy just by watching. As a Yoga instructor, you still have to be a good listener when it comes to all of your students? questions.

Most Yoga teachers do a good job with handling student questions. However, here is something to think about: Do you try to clarify why a question is being asked? Consider that your student may not be clear in his or her communication skills and you need to ?get to the heart of the matter.?

The motivation behind a question is more important than the question itself. You don?t want to waste your time giving unrelated information before, after, or during a Yoga class. So, get a clarification about what you are being asked, and learn why your Yoga student is truly asking you this question. This will benefit the both of you and avoid wasting your student?s time, as well.

If a student asks you a simple question, with a ?yes? or ?no? answer, you can still find out the motivational source by saying, ?Yes, but why do you ask?? This technique is really that simple, and you may find the question is much deeper than you originally perceived.

Another mistake some Yoga teachers make is handling a question defensively. Your student thinks enough of you to ask for your opinion and is interested in your answer. If he or she had no respect for you, your opinion would not be important. Now, whether you perceive an objection or not, you should ask for a clarification before answering.

There is a positive side to all of the questions your Yoga students ask, but you must clearly see the motive behind the question in order to give the best answer. The bottom line is: Even though you are now at the front of the Yoga class, your listening skills must be better than your best listeners in your class.

10 Natural Agents to Help Protect Against Heart & Lung Disease

There are many natural agents widely available that can improve your health. Here are 10 natural agents proven to help protect against Heart and Lung Disease.

Vitamin C

Study after study has shown how taking a daily dose of Vitamin C (1g a day) really can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. This nutrient also protects the lungs, especially in smokers. Smoking increases your need for Vitamin C and smokers are recommended to take an extra 35mg a day to compensate.

The richest food source of vitamin C is acerola berries and Viridian (http://www.viridian.com) has launched a new vitamin C made from this fruit.

Hawthorn

Roman physicians used hawthorn as a cardio tonic in the first century AD and clinical studies now show that its healing action is thanks to the presence of proanthocyanidins - red and purple pigments (sometimes called anthocyanins) found in plants which help prevent degenerative disease of the heart, blood vessels and lungs, and are thought to help reverse arthesosclerotic plaque deposits.

Cleverly hawthorn can re-regulate both high and low blood pressure and works to dilate both peripheral and coronary blood vessels, making it a useful aid in the management of angina.

Garlic

With the advent of more cutting-edge remedies, such as red yeast, it seems almost old fashioned now to recommend garlic as a cardiocascular tonic, but it does still merit a mention as a broad-spectrum treatment for arterial disease.

The active agent is an odourless chemical called alliin. When you cut or crush raw garlic, this is immediately converted to allicin, which is the substance that gives garlic its powerful smell.

Allicin then rapidly breaks down into various components and unless herbal remedy manufacturers who want to offer odourless capsules, find a way to stop this process, no active agents will be left. This is the reason there is so much controversy about the different brands and forms of garlic.

Apples

An apple a day may help keep lung cancer at bay, according to preliminary evidence that suggests a very positive relationship between eating five or more apples a week and healthy lung function. Researchers admit they cannot explain why eating apples can offset normal age-related deterioration in lung functioning but suggest it may be thanks to the presence of two active agents quercetin and pectin.

Dandelion

This humble backyard weed is a powerhouse of nutrients that work together to promote healthy heart and lung functioning. Although better known as a digestive tonic it can also work to promote good cholesterol and has a diuretic effect in the body, which then works to regulate blood pressure, when you use the leaves.

Dandelion provides more membrane and lung supporting vitamin A than carrots, is an excellent source of heart-protecting potassium and can help maintain good iron levels to prevent anaemia. The young leaves are delicious tossed into a summer salad.

Guggul

This is a mixture of gum resin substances taken from the plant Commiphora Mukul, which is approved for use as a cholesterol lowering agent in India. Guggul which can also play a role in the treatment of Acne has also been shown to exert protective properties against drug-induced myocardial necrosis and is thought to have useful anti-inflammatory properties.

Taurine

A sulphur-containing amino acid present in high levels in meats and fish, taurine, taken as a supplement has been shown to lower blood pressure and plasma epinephrine (adrenaline) levels. People with high blood pressure and heart problems have higher levels of this hormone circulating in the blood - since it helps the heart work harder to increase its output of blood and thus compensate for any pumping problems - but lower levels in the heart muscle itself, which usually has more taurine present than any other amino acid.

Arginine

Sold in supplement form as L-arginine, the body uses this amino acid as a precursor to nitric oxide, which, in turn, dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It has been successfully used to help support stable angina patients and in clinical trials, high dosages (17g a day) have been shown to lower bad cholesterol without affecting levels of good choloesterol.

Arginine is found naturally in meats, diary products, poultry and fish.

Homocysteine Modulators

Homocysteine is known to be 40 times a more accurate predictor of the risk of heart disease than cholesterol levels. Homocysteine itself is not a natural protector against heart disease, but the agents usd to regulate its levels are.

Magnesium

Many unexpected adult deaths are thought to occur as a result of fatal hearts rhythm disturbances. We know that magnesium defeciency, which is common in men and women, predisposes to higher risk of these kind of disturbances, so taking a therapeutic daily dose of a magnesium supplement would seem sensible along with increasing your dietary intake of this nutrient.

Potassium

We know that potassium works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance and normalise heart rythms (potassium works inside the cells; sodium works outside them) and documented research proves that a low-potassium, high-sodium (salt) diet is linked with high blood pressure.

Cholesterol Reduction Great News for Tea Drinkers

Your chest feels tight. Then a pain begins. You feel short of breath and every movement makes it worse. You are experiencing a coronary. Thankfully you survive and start to think about what went wrong and to find ways of adjusting your lifestyle. You may even require bypass surgery or to be on drugs for the rest of your life. Cholesterol is a major factor leading to coronary thrombosis, one of the biggest killers in western society. Most people have heard about cholesterol and appreciate that it leads to heart disease. But what is cholesterol? Why is it dangerous and how can you reduce its harmful effects?

There are a number of fats in the bloodstream; two of the important ones are cholesterol and triglycerides. There are two main forms of cholesterol, HDP (high density lipoprotein) and LDP (low density lipoprotein). The HDP is sometimes referred to as good cholesterol but most of the cholesterol in your blood will be the more sinister LDP - it is this that needs reducing. High levels of LDP and triglycerides cause thickening, hardening and roughening of the normally elastic walls of the arteries. Where the walls have been roughened, blood cells tend to stick, building up to form a clot. The clot can grow and block the artery or be dislodged and block the blood flow elsewhere. In the brain, it is called a stroke, in the lungs, a pulmonary embolism and in the heart, a coronary. Some of the cholesterol in your blood comes from the food that you eat and some is produced by your liver as it processes the nutrients from your food. There is no simple solution to high cholesterol levels; in fact you could be genetically predisposed to high cholesterol.

A study by the Dutch suggests that tea drinkers, particularly women, may derive some protection against the build up of cholesterol in their arteries. Just one or two cups per day seemed to have a marked effect. As always with biological research, there may be other contributing factors, the Dutch team acknowledge that people who drink tea generally have a healthier lifestyle and diet. However the fairly high levels of antioxidant flavonoids in black tea are thought to protect against arterial plaques, the fatty deposits that clog arteries, by preventing fat from being deposited on artery walls. In addition, green tea seems to speed up the metabolism, including fat calorie burning, according to researchers from the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Their findings showed a small increase in daily energy expenditure when compared to a control group. It is thought that the caffeine in the tea interacts with the flavonoids in tea to increase the rate of calorie burning.

The British Medical Journal has also reported a Japanese study on the benefits of green tea consumption in preventing cardiovascular disease, liver disorders and possibly cancer. The study, in the 1990s, involved over 100 men aged over 40. Tea consumption was classified as less than 3 cups, between 4 and 9 cups, and over 10 cups per day. It was found that consumption of green tea was significantly associated with lower serum concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins. The study also found that the strong association remained unaltered after age, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and relative body weight were controlled for.

So in short, tea drinking is a great habit to develop, especially if it is a good quality, pure organic green tea. Not only does it taste good, it may protect your heart, reduce your chances of cancer and help to keep your weight down, all by drinking just a few cups per day!

When pregnant or nursing only small amounts of green tea or other unprocessed or partially processed teas e.g. oolong should be used, it may also interfere with the action of MAO inhibitors and blood thinning medication. Also the consumption of teas may interfere with the absorption of medicines. Check with your physician before increasing your tea consumption. This article is intended to be for information about the nutritional benefits of green tea only and should not be regarded as medical advice in its own right. You should seek the assistance of a qualified physician if you require medical advice on any condition mentioned in this article.
